Special Needs Teacher Assistant Guidelines St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School South Clayton December 2011
Rationale
The Teacher Assistant is responsible to the Principal and contributes to the provision of a quality educational service under the supervision of the Student Services Co-ordinator and under the direction of the Classroom Teacher.

Aims
The Classroom Teacher provides the primary instruction to the student with special needs and is supported by the teacher assistant to:
  • work with students who have additional needs (academic/ social emotional/ physical) to access the curriculum in order to achieve their educational potential.
  • encourage students to develop and demonstrate attitudes and work habits that promote independence, foster appropriate interdependence, promote inclusion and peer interactions and enhance each student’s self-image.

Implementation / Role Description
The Special Needs Teacher Assistant will:
  • contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • work in the classroom and / or open learning areas
  • work under the direction of the Classroom Teacher
  • support students who are receiving (LNSLN) Literacy Numeracy and Special Learning Needs Funding
  • support other students who require educational support, providing individual and small group support
  • promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate
  • attend Programme Support Group meetings where appropriate
  • participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required
  • assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including during recess times as required
  • accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required
  • perform other tasks that need to be completed under the direction of the Principal and Student Services Leader
  • provide a documented summary of work completed

St. Andrew’s Teaching Staff will:
  • together with the Student Services Leader, inform the Teacher Assistant of the educational needs and characteristics of the students with whom they work, as well as classroom and school practices and routines
  • provide brief , clear written instructions about the specific tasks to be completed by the Teacher Assistant in the Teacher Assistant Folder. This may include working individually with the child or a group of students.

St Andrew’s School will:
  • provide time for the Student Services Leader and the Special Needs School Officers to meet on a regular basis
  • support the Teacher Assistant to seek out relevant professional Learning
  • provide the Teacher Assistant with a timetable
  • involve the Teacher Assistant in all aspects of school life
